GET RESTING · REFLECTIONS

The Destination Is the Journey

October 13, 2026

As I continue on this journey of rest, I am discovering more and more insights into the truths of God's grace, His presence, and the peace He desires for us to experience. I am beginning to understand that rest is not simply a destination I am trying to reach, but a way of living and walking with Him each day. So often, we spend our lives looking ahead, believing that peace, joy, and fulfillment are waiting somewhere in the future—when circumstances change, when problems are resolved, or when we finally accomplish what we have set out to do. Yet perhaps the greatest discovery is that the destination is the journey itself. Rest is not something we must wait to experience. It is something we can enter into today, right where we are, through our relationship with Christ. Jesus invites us in Matthew 11:28: “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

I think about a peaceful walk through a beautiful forest, where a winding trail follows a gently flowing stream. If my only concern is reaching the end of the trail, I may overlook the beauty surrounding me—the sunlight filtering through the trees, the sound of water moving over the rocks, the birds singing, and the gentle breeze moving through the leaves. The beauty of the walk is not found only at the end of the trail, but in every step along the way. In much the same way, our journey with God is an invitation to slow down, become aware of His presence, and discover the gifts He has placed before us each day. Psalm 23:2–3 reminds us, “He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul.” Notice that the Shepherd does not simply point us toward a distant place of rest. He walks with us, leads us, and restores us along the way.

I am also learning that this journey of rest is about letting go—letting go of the need to control every outcome, understand every circumstance, or constantly strive to make things happen. It is learning to trust that God is already at work in my life, even when I cannot see what lies around the next bend in the road. There will be mountains to climb, unexpected turns, quiet valleys, and seasons of waiting. But none of these experiences need to separate me from the rest that is available in Christ. In Hebrews 4:9–10, we are reminded that there remains a rest for the people of God and that those who enter His rest cease from their own works, as God did from His. This is the beautiful truth of grace: I do not have to strive to earn what Christ has already provided. I can walk forward in faith, trusting Him with both the journey and the outcome.

Perhaps this is what it truly means to live a life of rest. It is not withdrawing from life, abandoning our dreams, or waiting until everything becomes peaceful. It is learning to live fully, with a heart that is resting in Christ, while embracing each day as a gift and an adventure with Him. Rest becomes the foundation from which we live, love, grow, serve others, and experience the beauty of His creation. There is no need to rush through today in search of a better tomorrow. God is with me here, in this moment, and there is so much to discover along the way. The journey is not keeping me from the destination. The journey, lived in His presence, is where I discover the rest I have been searching for.

A sunlit woodland path beside a flowing stream

Imagine walking along a river. The water doesn't struggle to find its way downstream. It flows around rocks, moves through quiet pools, and continues its course. Along the way, it nourishes the trees, plants, and wildlife surrounding it.

Our journey of rest can be much the same. We do not have to force every outcome. We can trust God to lead us, allowing His peace to shape the way we experience life along the way.

Foundational Thought
Rest is not the reward waiting for us at the end of the journey. Rest is the foundation from which we experience the journey.
